In today’s fast-paced, competitive society, it is important to do anything you can to excel and get ahead in life. One of the best ways to do this is to earn a college degree. However, college is usually quite expensive, and some people may even see it as “out of their reach.” The good news is that there are plenty of scholarships and grants you can receive to help you pay for a decent college education; one of these scholarships is the “Girls Going Places Scholarship Program.” The Girls Going Places Scholarship is a scholarship for young women entrepreneurs between the ages of twelve and eighteen.
To qualify for this scholarship, you have to be an ambitious, diligent, and aspiring young woman who has embarked on an entrepreneurial endeavor. The components the judges look for in applicants is taking steps towards complete financial independence, successfully up-starting and managing a business or entrepreneurial endeavor on your own, and demonstrating a dedication to making an impact and different in society or your community. The competition for this scholarship may be a little tough compared to some other scholarships available. For example, last year’s winner began her own free-range egg business named “Chelsey’s Gourmet Pasture Eggs” and franchised the business to profit off other’s work.
The good news is that scholarship consists of a top place winner, second place, third place, and twelve finalists; so even if you don’t win first place, you still have a chance to win some money. The award amount for first place is $10,000, $5,000 for second place, and $3,000 for third place. The twelve finalists will each receive $1,000. So whether you win first place or last place, you will still receive a pretty decent scholarship to help fund your college education. The process of applying for this scholarship is fairly easy. First, visit http://www.girlsgoingplaces.com/home and print the official entry form. Then, you must request an adult to sponsor you (this can include a family member such as a parent, aunt, grandmother, etc) and they must write a 750 word recommendation letter for you.
You can have four other people write recommendations of this length to submit as well. You must also include a personal statement about your business and what being an entrepreneur means to you. It is not required, but it would help if you include supporting materials such as brochures, testimonials, DVDs, CDs, or financial data on your business. The deadline for the scholarship is usually in February of every new year. The 2011-2012 deadline is currently February 28th, 2011. This scholarship is for ambitious young women.
