Scholarships for Left Handed People
If you are left handed and interested in going to college, you may be interested to know that there are Left Handed Scholarships, or scholarships for left handed people. With the rising cost of education, everyone, including left-handers, is looking for the money they need to help them graduate debt free.
A left hander is someone whose left hand is dominant over their right; left handers, also called Southpaws, typically use their left hands for most tasks, such as writing and using scissors. The list of famous left handers is long: Albert Einstein, Picasso, Muppets creator Jim Henson, and American Presidents Garfield, Reagan, and Clinton are all left handed. Even though in the past, it was a cause of social stigma, it is now believed that left-handers are more artistic than their right-handed counterparts. In fact, the word sinister comes from the Latin word for left, because of the stigma attached to being left-handed.
Can Left Handed People Still Get a Scholarship ?
Today, left-handedness is no longer seen as odd, nor are left-handers looked down upon. Instead, if you are left-handed, you have a connection to the famous and successful left-handers mentioned above. You left-handedness might also be your ticket to money for education through a Scholarship. Just like there scholarships for other minority groups and physical types, there is one out there just for southpaws.
Although roughly ten percent of the United States are lefties, there is only college or university that offers a special scholarship just for left-handed students. That college is Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania. Through the Frederick and Mary F. Buckley Scholarship program, Juniata College awards a scholarship to its lefty students. This Scholarship is only available to students who have been studying at Juniata for a year, and it cannot be applied to any other school, but if your interested in a left-handed scholarship, Juniata might be right for you.
When applying for the scholarship, a student will be asked if he or she is left-handed. Although it is unlikely that the scholarship committee will check to see if an applicant is left-handed, applicants are encouraged to put together a list of reference to confirm that the applicant is left-handed.
The scholarship got its start when two Juniata College students, who both happened to be left-handers, were paired in tennis class because their teacher did not want to pair them with right-handed students. The two fell in love and were later married. Much like their love blossomed from the disrespect their teacher showed left-handers, and outstanding educational opportunity for a left handed scholarship blossomed as well.
Can You Be Accepted Into This Left Handed Scholarship Program?
The committee is not only interested in left-handedness, however. To be accepted for this scholarship program, left handed applicants must demonstrate good academic performance and leadership skills. The grades generally required are that an applicant have a grade not lower than a 3.39, but being top of your class only improves your odds of getting this competitive scholarship.
This scholarship awards between $1000 and $15000 in educational grants every year. This academic grant covers tuition, books, room, and board. With the cost of education rising, this money is incredibly useful for left-handers looking to pay for college.
Just like any other scholarship program, this one places a strong emphasis on outstanding academics and leadership abilities. This highlights the importance of doing well in school and being a leader in your community, no matter what hand you use. The only difference is that this scholarship requires you to be a southpaw. This goes to show you that no matter what your physical attributes, there’s a scholarship out there just for you. All you need to do to find the right scholarship for you is identify those special attributes that make you unique, like being left-handed, and apply for the scholarships that are right for you. With diligent searching and effort, any student can find the money they need to pay for college and make their dreams come true, even those looking for left handed scholarships.
