Medical Scholarships

Project A generation of Roma experts in the medical scholarships field is divided into two parts, as follows: in the scholarship program educational and personal development for the young Roma interested in a career in the medical field (academic scholarships, tutoring, mentoring, camps) and champagne for communication promoting the training program, focusing on combating prejudices about Roma employment and public authorities in a long-term approach to support young Roma continue to grow interested in the medical field.

In this respect, the Open Society Institute (OSI) together with the Roma Education Fund (REF) launched the scholarship program for Roma students. The “Roma Health Scholarship. Leadership in health: a generation of health professionals” will support 60 Roma students. Roma Education Fund will provide scholarships for Roma students attending the School of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry or colleges of nurses and midwives, doctors and residents, if these institutions are accredited by the Ministry of Education. Medical Scholarships – Professional Motivation and Leadership Potential!

Scholarship Program for “Roma Education Fund” will provide scholarships to students who will study at faculties of medicine in the course of the day, those nurses and midwives colleges and resident doctors. An evaluation committee will review the dossiers submitted in terms of the academic situation of each candidate’s professional motivation and leadership potential. Beneficiaries will be eligible for medical grants additional scholarships to study a foreign language and will be supported to attend professional conferences. Fellows will be included in an annual program of tutorials and mentoring, conducted in cooperation with resident doctors in Romania, which Medical students will be supported in terms of professional and academic.

The “Roma Health Scholarship. Leadership in health: a generation of health professionals “is an unprecedented initiative in Central and Eastern Europe and starts from a basic problem of the Roma – difficult access to health services.

In 2008, the first year of implementation of this program, 35 Roma resident doctors and students and faculty College of Medicine in Romania have received scholarships.

Scholarships and Voluntary Health

Young people selected will be encouraged to develop their leadership potential as they will implement the entire period of the project, 40 health volunteer projects. Intervention project beneficiaries will be 1,000 members of Roma communities in Romania.

Young people selected will participate in the program and a free camp advocacy. Camps will be held between September 1 to 10, in an environment that will combine life experiences with professional experience. Communication and leadership, developing an advocacy campaign, Roma culture, national and international legislation concerning the right to health are just some of the topics addressed in training programs and camps.
Scholarships are also available for all students of Roma studies in a university medical or pharmacy accredited by the state, that in a medical college in any form of study (full or part-time).

It is essential that by May 30 each of those interested to apply for the scholarship by visiting the website of the program. The scholarships will cover all expenses related to the study over the course of one academic year, including accommodation, transport, textbooks and supplies, fees for participation in conferences, seminars and other professional events, subscriptions to libraries and professional databases, so that scholars can be focus exclusively on academic work of medical scholarships.
