Medical Grants

Medical grants are an important and historical part of the American Education and Medicinal system. It is a great way for the United States government to show its citizens and residents that they pay great attention to those who strive to do research and improve the scope of medicine and create advancement that can only help both doctors and the nation in general. They are generally given to students pursuing particular fields of science in order to assist them in paying for college. The government’s help assist these low income students, and many organizations that are private as well as private colleges and universities also have grants in place for those students they think are the most deserving of the reward or in most need of the money. These can be for undergraduate education, medical school education, and/or obtaining your doctorate as well.

There are various places where one can obtain medical grants. One such place is the Howard Hughes Medical Institute where there are many research fellowships for advanced medical students. They have their Medical Research Fellows program which can be applied for by any student within the United States and they also have a program for international students considering similar fellowships of study and research. They provide an annual stipend of around thirty thousand dollars in order to cover education and certain living costs as well. More information on how to apply and the types of programs available to you can be obtained on their website.

Then there is also the National Institutes of Health which are more government based programs for aid to students involved with medical research. They have various grants listed on their website. One such grant is the grant for Research Involving Human Subjects. There are also grants for animal research. These grants are very specific and would only be available to students that are considering that particular specialty, as opposed to grants that are more general in the aid they give to medical students.

Many universities such as Duke or Vanderbilt or Johns Hopkins also provide medical grants to students interested in research in the field of medicine. These funds are, of course, limited depending upon the funds that the institution has available to them and are extremely competitive. An example can be found here: Duke has their web page for grants. In order to get one of these grants the student must really take initiative and must actually put forward a proposal to the college or university and show how them giving the grant to the student would help both the student, the college, and the medical field in general. Thus unique research topics are encouraged.

If one thinks about it, these medical grants are actually an integral aspect of medicine in the United States. If these grants were not available then research would be highly limited as very few people actually have the money to simply go into a research project for many years and not worry about if they are going to make any profit from their research. They would simply become doctors or nurses or surgeons like everyone else who goes into medicine and the research field would be left empty. However, when there are so many funds available for specific research it ensures there will always be people willing to do this task and ensure that medicine does not stagnate and there is always progress in that field. At the end of the day, it is actions such as this by the government and private institutions that ensures the United States remains the hub for all advancements in medicine and medical grants must get the credit.
