Scholarships for college students are awarded to a wide variety of students. Students may be eligible to apply for a wide variety of scholarships, from those based on academic achievement to those based on creative ability. There are scholarships targeted to specific departments or fields of study, such as the Melba Priestley Scholarship for Georgia education students. The Melba Priestley Scholarship is awarded to a college junior, senior or college graduate who intends to enter the teaching field. This scholarship is unique in that it is only awarded during odd numbered years, so the next year to apply for this scholarship would be the year 2012.

For college students in Georgia who are interested in this scholarship opportunity, more details can be found on the Alpha Delta Kappa’s website. Another scholarship for college students is the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Students can not apply for this scholarship, instead they must be nominated by the school’s Truman Faculty Representative. The student who is nominated will be one of the top in their class, and more information can be found at the Harry S. Truman Foundation’s website. Scholarships for college students can also be given through corporations. One example being the The Walmart Associate Scholarship. This scholarship is for students who are also employed at Walmart, and is awarded four times a year. Information about Walmart’s scholarship can be found at their website.

Another corporation that offers scholarships is ExxonMobil. They have many scholarship opportunities for undergraduates and graduates. Students who are minorities and are in math or engineering fields are eligible. More details can be found on ExxonMobil’s website. Some students may qualify for scholarships simply on what hand is their dominate hand. Students attending Juniata college, in PA., who are left handed can apply for Juniata’s Left Handed Scholarship. It is open to Juniata college sophomores, juniors and seniors. It was founded by Mary Francis Beckley, a left handed former Juniata college student. As you can see, scholarships for college students are given to all types of students, based on anything from creative ability to which hand you write with. It is important for each college student to do their research, whether online or through their college’s resources that are available to their students.

If a college student is having a hard time finding anything that they are eligible to apply for, they should ask for guidance from their college adviser. College adviser’s can be quite helpful in finding scholarships, or at least pointing students in the right direction to search for themselves. If you are in college and are interested in applying for scholarships in order to help pay for tuition and living expenses, you may also consider obtaining a job on campus. You’ll be in much better financial shape and less of a starving student, if you have some side income. Also, not having to rely on your parents every time you need a new college course book is a big plus. All of this extra work experience can come in useful for some scholarships applications that ask for life experience essays.
